1980's movie about a magic box where the people turn to animals?

i am looking for a movie that i used to watch when i was a kid. i would guess the movie was made in the mid 80's. it was about a boy and his father (i think) that had some sort of magic wooden box and when they jumped into it they would go into some sort of other world where the boy would turn into a bird and the father a deer. thats really all i remember about the movie. im not sure if it was a disney movie or a made for t.v. movie or it possibly could have been a p.b.s. movie. thanks for the help. i have been trying to figure this out for a long time. it was not animated by the way!

I've been thinking about your question for the last hour and the only movie that I can think of whereby a human becomes a bird is in Ladyhawk from 1985. It doesn't fit your description but I thought that I'd suggest it anyway. It's a movie about a young boy, an older fellow (a father figure), and a woman. Here's the brief plot: Captain Etienne Navarre is a man on whose shoulders lie a cruel curse. Punished for loving each other, Navarre must become a wolf by night whilst his lover, Lady Isabeau, takes the form of a hawk by day. Together, with the thief Philippe Gaston, they must try to overthrow the corrupt Bishop and in doing so break the spell.
