ok i know this is rather vague, but it's about the best i can get. it's about the only thing i can remember about this movie that's reliable...other than that it's an adventure movie in a desert setting (middle east perhaps?) and the guy who gets shot is the hero. he had black hair and maybe a goatee or beard and he had a lady with him. he gets shot in the leg and he ties what i think is a bible to it to stop the bleeding.
i saw this movie as a kid more than once....and for some reason, two things stuck with me: Rutger Hauer and 1983. now i'm pretty certain Rutger Hauer was not in this movie, because i thought he was the hero, and when i saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer i thought he was the guy who Paul Reubens played. so, with that in mind, i'm fairly convinced it wasn't specifically released in 1983 either. i'd say it was released in the last 25 years. someone on IMDb said it might be Nighthawks, but i don't think that's it.

Movie where guy gets shot in leg and ties book to wound to stop the bleeding?
I've put the site below for movies with the keyword "shot in the leg". However, when I put "desert" into the search with the original search I didn't get anything that sounded right. Take a look through the titles--maybe something will catch your eye.
